# How to read a record — Larger UK companies with a proposal to strike off

> What the record is, what the status means, and what is left out.

## How to read these records

### Which companies

Three tests, all from the Companies House register: the status is “Active - Proposal to Strike off”; the last
accounts were full, group, medium-sized, audited small, audited abridged or audit-exempt subsidiary accounts; and
those accounts were made up to a date in 2019 or later.

### Two routes to a strike-off

The directors can apply to have a company struck off when it is no longer needed. Companies House can also start
the process itself when a company stops filing. The open file does not say which route applies.

### It can be stopped

A creditor or any interested person can object, and the directors can withdraw their application. Many proposals
never end in a dissolution.

### After dissolution

Whatever a dissolved company still owns passes to the Crown as *bona vacantia*. A dissolved company can be
restored to the register by application.

### What is not here

Names of directors or any individual. Micro-entities, dormant companies and companies that never filed accounts.
Companies already dissolved. Companies in liquidation or administration, which are on a
 separate site .

**Director of a company about to be struck off?**

The internal data of a company that employed 50 people or more (Slack or Microsoft Teams archive, documentation, project histories) may still have value after it has stopped operating.

[Check whether this company’s data qualifies →](/pro.md) We are paid by the buyer if a partnership is signed, never by the company. Whether personal data in those archives can be transferred is a legal question for whoever controls them. Not affiliated with Companies House.
